Acrylic, Gouache, Varnish

When life is painful, when we really see we aren’t “walking in the garden in the cool of the day” with God (Genesis 3:9), when we recognize we are helpless to the world’s sin and our own, when we are jaded, we are to turn outward.

In Habakkuk 1, the prophet is crying out to the Lord. Habakkuk is pleading with God saying your people are against each other. Where are you, God? God speaks to Habakkuk in 1:5 saying, “Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” God goes on to explain He is working even when it seems He isn’t, even when it’s not the way we would choose.

God’s created world echoes Eden and points us toward the promised new heavens and new earth (Revelation 21:1). God calls us to look and have faith in Him, to be astounded by Him, to realize His presence. God’s creation sings of His handiwork and character (Psalm 19:1-4). He fills the earth with beauty and encourages us through it, pointing and echoing His promises.

A day is coming when “the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people…. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore…” (Revelation 21:3-4).

May these paintings be echoes and pointers of our faithful God and His eternal promises to His children. “Now all we can see of God is like a cloudy picture in a mirror. Later we will see him face to face” (1 Corinthians 13:12).
